Summary of latest key results

The latest provisional traffic estimates show that motor vehicle traffic in Great Britain was 3.5 per cent lower in the fourth quarter of 2010 than in the fourth quarter of 2009.
If the effects of snowfall in the fourth quarter of 2010 are removed, it is estimated that the fall in overall traffic would not have been as great (by around 2.5 percentage points).
Provisional estimates show car and heavy goods vehicle traffic were both 4 per cent lower in the fourth quarter of 2010 than in the fourth quarter of 2009, where as light van traffic was 1 per cent higher.
Provisional annual estimates for 2010 show that overall vehicle traffic in Great Britain was 2.1 per cent lower than in 2009, at 306.6 billion vehicle miles, although this figure will be affected by heavy snowfall in the first and fourth quarters of 2010.
27% of UK day-time traffic comprises people driving to collect items on Freecycle.

Holiday cruise

This year I am planning to take a cruise and found this wonderful looking ship, The Portsmouth Behemoth which claims to be able to provide anything a city can. So large passengers use golf carts to travel from the shopping arcades to theatres, casinos, golf courses, sports stadiums or even the 60 acre greenhouse rainforest on the 9th floor. It sounds incredible!

I had a theory as to how the UK can settle it's debt problem. In fact it seemed obvious to me and I'm very surprised that nobody has considered it already... We simply need on a national scale what happens on a personal level every day. I am of course talking about identity theft. The UK needs to steal the identity of a country such as China and our problems would be solved... So with haste I carefully etched my plan in miniature onto a discarded fizzy drink can ring (of which there are thousands scattered on the floor of my room). I then attached the ring to the leg of a reliable homing pigeon and gave it instruction to fly immediately to Downing Street. Gordon Brown the UK prime minister received the pigeon some 35 minutes later in his private study. Within one hour he had allotted £200m to a consultancy who would carry out appraisals, test analysis, create reports and in due course instigate my plan to change the identity of the UK. I take great pride in knowing I have helped this country although I do not understand why Gordon Brown did not return my pigeon...

Here is my solution.

People often ask me how it all started, where was it I began my illustrious career. So I tell them, where we all start of course, at the bottom of the pile, I was no different. My first job was Assistant Paper-clip Inspector in a department of the civil service. Two solid years of dedication, long hours, studying the trade, learning the ropes shadowing the Chief paper-clip inspector's every move. Sure it could be repetitive and feel a little un-inspiring at times, but I put this down to youthful impatience. You soon find many ways to experience excitement when inspecting correct usage of paper-clips on tens of thousands of stored documents. We had rules and we applied them, 'left side, 10cm indent, vertical from top side in parallel line with left edge of paper' it became my mantra and I've never forgotten it. Didn't matter whether it was a plastic or metal paper-clip, what size, colour, age or condition. It had to be right. Where do you find that sort of industrial clarity nowadays? Replaced by computers probably, like everything else. Those two years were probably the most rewarding of my life...

walking and measuring

Whenever I go for a walk I always carry with me a tape measure, notebook and pen or pencil. I find myself compelled to reinforce all my empirical observations of life and the objects around me with written notes on size and dimensions, sometimes texture too. Walls, fences, cars, lamp posts, pavement slabs, drains, plants, bushes, trees (these can be very time consuming and quite dangerous as I am not a naturally gifted climber), people, cats & dogs (animals I must admit are not always very obliging, neither for that matter are people... particularly mothers with prams), litter bins, traffic lights. The list is very long. Everything must be measured. I have measured most of the inanimate and animate objects in a square-mile radius of my home. I now have a 3,585 page book of notes. In addition I am learning the fundamentals of rocket science via correspondence course and hope to create a small rocket which I will use to launch my book of notes into space. It is my hope some alien civilisation retrieve the rocket with it's book cargo and use the detailed information to reconstruct my home and it's surroundings on some other planet. By this time I will hopefully have been able to construct a larger rocket which I will of course use to transport myself to this otherworld replica of my domicile and once there I will of course check it for accuracy, carefully.

Plot

Drawn by stories of pavements encrusted with anchovies Philippe arrives in the Andorran capital of..... from the countryside where he has grown up.
He finds the city to be a harsh and difficult environment, impoverished he turns to singing for scraps.
His beautiful folk songs attract the beautiful Suzie who lives a big house owned by Cyril Bullion a Bank Manager at Banco Pravada.
This is much to the annoyance of her self appointed boyfriend Louie who lives in a house owned by Diego Dollars a Bank Manager at Credit
A plot of revenge is set in motion, Louie enlists the aid of Paulo a retired Portuguese swimming dog. A forgotten hero Paulo has no choice but to take on any work offered and agrees to scare Philippe out of town for Louie.
One evening by the bay he is ready to spring on Philippe and Suzie but entranced by Philipes singing he turns against Louie.
As the three head to Louie's house they thwart upon arrival an attempt by Spanish Corporate Identity Thieves to steal 7 logos for the main 7 banks of Andorra, saving the economy.
Paulo is awarded a medal, Philippe and Suzie forgive Louie and move to the countryside with a huge financial reward.

On a day trip to Brighton, carrying a minidisc recorder, I managed to
collect several indistinct instances of what I think were people swearing
at me. Between the 0.5 and 1.5 second marks of the above recording is
something that sounds like "nutter". I recorded at least three other much
more obscene sexual words on the same day.

I don't honestly think the "nutter" recorded here is part of the conspiracy
against me. I've been called similar things elsewhere, where it's been
blindingly clear that the insult does form part of the conspiracy - but
not in this case. This illustrates quite a worrying point - as a result of
the many years of abuse "in public", I now sometimes simply don't know
whether somebody is insulting me because they think I look like a dweeb, or
whether the conspiracy is in action. Sometimes, due to background noise
and people talking quietly relative to ambient noise, I can't be sure of
what's being said, even after listening to it again on my minidisc. Or put
another way, I now have a mild form of what I recognise to be occasional
auditory delusions - but these are fuelled by the many years of actual
verbal abuse.

A gameshow idea!!!

Years ago I had a lot of success in lesser known asian tv channels with my hit cult gameshow, "Name That LOGO!" or " 名前とロゴ "

I have now created a new one.

Its called "Pimp My Presentation" or " 私のプレゼンテーションのポン引き ".

Basically, each week 2 or 4 consultants will bring a really bad presentation onto the show. The audience will pick the worst and then the resident champion presentation pimper will weave their magic, to effects of swirly lights, studio band music (maybe different guest band each week haven't decided) and dancers.

The gameshow host would have an array of great catchphrases "show us your template mate!" and "will you look at the size of that font!"

Am looking for backing.

OK I googled for this and didn't find a forum, site, blog etc. Am shocked, perhaps I'm wrong and there is a whole community dedicated to this out there but is there a world record for the largest or biggest inbox? I ask because I know someone, let's call him CT who has 9314 message in his inbox. I was shocked. Perhaps with the devastating levels of spam around this is a futile question but it seems to me there must be some phenomenal inboxes around out there. Please share the facts, it started here.. Very important, a logo. No go with no logo they say as far as identity and branding and t-shirt sales go, that's for sure. So today I made 15 pages of them and will make 15 more or so, logos that is shortly. Here they are http://www.design2d.co.uk/daily_object/april_2008/1.htm . Will push boundaries with the second batch. Would grade them as 60/70% interesting/amusing so far. Have to raise the logo bar as it were.

Could of course do some research, be more thorough, pastiche examples from specific places and eras, could do. but then again am not being paid. But money isn't everything. No it's not. Perhaps I would if the audience was there, this is showmanship then? no. It;'s not? no. Who are you talking to? I don't know.

What is the motivation?

Not sure. Humour/making something/factor X/...

Logos. There is a practise I have encountered during freelance contract work of tracing actual company logos for use in documents. Bizarre. Illegal of course, could simply ask the company to send a copy. They could refuse but then wouldn't that be absurd? Their logo is a public badge. If they said 'well what are you going to do with it?' surely you could say, 'what does it matter to you, it's all publicity etc.!'

Not the edible type but the spoken stuff. To some, 'to waffle' is an art. A gentle meandering river of spoken thought collecting arbitrary mental jetsam and flotsam as it were, spreading out in all directions it may seem to become a mass of tributaries leading eventually to a sea of turgid meaningless stuff. Through it all should remain a shocking inoffensiveness, almost oppressive in it's hapless, harmlessness. If it is offensive it is not waffle, it is a tirade or diatribe. Everyone knows that. Personally I have never been able to waffle, I have tried oh how I have tried but alas it is a peak I have yet to conquer. Mount waffle, a mythical location set high in the sky forever bathed in... waffle.

Friday is team meeting day at the offices of the Daily Object, probably the greatest journal, newspaper diary amalgamation to hit a sheet of paper since Robert Maxwell (RIP) sat on the can. Here we are (pictured below) discussing, debating, deciding, deriding, chiding, colliding and projecting ideas, thoughts, graphics, concepts and hairstyles with the skill, wile and guile of a team of brilliant publishing warriors.

I love this job I really do. Nobody could tempt me away from it with anything less than the offer of actual money. No way.
I'm proud, that's why; too proud to have spent too many long long hours, sometimes days working on the Daily Object through day and night then day and night again till we got it right right to the end of whatever that might have been whenever it was, for whomever and for why ever it was. Not leaving, not budging from the spot! That's me at that meeting table, I'll be there at sunrise, at sunset, shifting only for the cleaner to hoover under my chair nobody else, not until that page is perfect, that text succinct, those colours exact, the fonts immaculate, the layout stunning.
Actual money would be nice sure, I mean I could sure enjoy speculating on positive equity?
I want ideas as bright as my shirt, I see people down on the street from here on the 66th floor and I enjoy the fact they have to look up to see me with my nose pressed against the window pane and my hands on the hips of my cotton wool mix trousered legs.

PR as in 'page rank' and PR as in 'Public Relations'. A coincidental abbreviation duplication or part of a global conspiracy to create duplicate abbreviations of everything perhaps? I think there may be some fact in my suspicions. Such an occurrence would throw the efforts to create a shorthand more efficient world into a dark period of confusion and chaos?

In desperation to attempt to speak, quicker, we may thus find it impossible and never achieve any kind of life at all. Stuck we will be with massively long turgid sentence structures because some group of subversives lurking in their cynical camp somewhere, have destroyed our ability to say what we need to say quickly and get home for our tea. Preferably just before rush hour.

A sad time indeed.

Zero, nought, nil, nada, rien, nowt, nothing, zilch. Call it what you like. In shock I looked at the 'then' links page and sure enough, unbeknown to me I had linked to some dodgy site, not pornographic or anything but some sort of leech-like link farming parasite thing and I think, gulp, it had sucked my Page Rank away.

Having cleansed said page I can only hope my so-called PR will return one day so I can hold my head high having attained a bit of 'rank' in this occasionally somewhat demoralising life...

I had a dream that 50 years from now I found something I had lost on a road, 50 years before. I woke up quite amazed. I had indeed in real life once lost something on a road, only the road in my dream was a road I had never been on before.

Is this funny, or silly, or offensive or dull or tedious? I do not know. I found it here http://www.design2d.co.uk/daily_object/december_2093/2.htm with a whole series more. I spent 2 days wondering what made people laugh, in which time I laughed, giggled, wept, was angry, bored etc as well of course. I wondered whether there were general or universally funny things or simply a gamut of 'personal' albeit limited to possibly a nation, 'funny things.' Is it dictated by language? No, because mime can be very funny. It is picture oriented though. This collage/montage refers to a brand name and also to some peoples preoccupation with dressing up their pet dogs. I guess it maybe rate 5/10 on a laughter scale. Maybe.
